Christ Our Redeemer Part 3
Webster has a second definition (and many more, but for us, these two are the ones that are relevant) that stresses a different aspect of redemption:
2. Deliverance from bondage, distress, or from liability to any evil or forfeiture, either by money, labor or other means.
God is called the Redeemer of Israel in the Old Testament (Pas 19:14, Pas 78:35, Is 41:14 for "redeemer" in the KJV, 2 Sa 7:23; Psa 69:18; Mic 4:10 for "redeem", just as examples), the one who redeemed Israel by bringing it out of the house of bondage.
"Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with great judgments: And I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God: and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God, which bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians." (Exo 6:6-7)
And of course, Christ is likewise called our Redeemer, who gave his life as a ransom for many, to free us from the bondage to sin, by paying the wages for sin - death (Rom 6:23).
"For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins." (Mat 26:28)
